Remembering Mbongeni Ngema: A Legendary Director, Writer, and Activist
Ricardo Khan December 28, 2023
It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of one of our directors and writers, Mbongeni Ngema. Our brother was a brilliant performer, composer, director, writer and activist. He was known worldwide for how his work in theatre played a key role in South Africa’s resistance movement during the days of Apartheid. He was most popularly known for “Sarafina", "Woza Albert" and many more important works. At Crossroads we remember Mbongeni for "Sheila’s Day", first developed at Crossroads in workshop before its world premiere here in 1988. "Sheila’s Day" went on to perform all over the world, moving hearts and changing lives. Mbongeni was killed in a head-on car accident whilst returning from attending a funeral in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape, South Africa on Wednesday. He was a passenger in the vehicle.
